Wisconsin Community Banker
31
Security Officer Workshop
All financial institutions are
required to provide annual training
for their designated Security Officer
and Information Technology Security
Officer. CBW’s Security Officer Work-
shop meets this training requirement,
discusses current developments, and
presents best practices. Participants
can choose from three dates and loca-
tions around the state.
The 2014 workshop addressed the
data breaches at Target and other
retailers, the increase in identity theft
as the Baby Boom population ages,
and the continuing challenges of bank
robbery, embezzlement, and check
and loan fraud. A panel of security
and law enforcement professionals
discussed best practices, and attendees
heard about recent security incidents
involving Wisconsin institutions.
Training via CBW Partnerships
Community Bankers of Wisconsin
builds bank value and offers valuable
training through collaborations with
many partners. In addition to the
CBC and Leadership Development for
Community Bankers programs, CBW
works with CFT to offer a variety of
in-person, online, and independent
study bank industry courses. It also
collaborates with the SBS Institute to
provide education programs that cer-
tify a banker has the knowledge and
skills to protect against today’s infor-
mation security threats, occasional
workshops on specific topics — such
as the Oct. 1 Compliance Workshop
presented by Michael Best & Fried-
rich, LLP, and the Oct. 8–9 How to
Create and Maintain
a Sales Culture with
Bob Erickson, presi-
dent of Bank Train-
ing, Waukon, Iowa.
This summer, CBW,
in conjunction with
the Axley Brynel-
son, LLP, law firm,
developed a unique
seminar, the Wis-
consin Banking Law
Update for the state’s
community bankers.
Through ICBA Secu-
rities, CBW members
receive compli-
mentary access to its webinar series,
including, for example, the Sept. 24
session, Capital Markets Solutions to
Enhance Core Banking Activity.
CBWWebinars
Live webinars are CBW’s most
popular training opportunity, with
almost 100 webinars annually attract-
ing some 2,500 participants. In 2014
each of four series (ACH Specialist,
Director, Required Compliance, and
Risk Management series) offered six
webinars with a price discount for
banks signing up for one or more
complete series. Though presented
live, each webinar may also be viewed
through an on-demand Web link and/
or a CD-Rom.
Timely topics focus on what a bank
needs to know now about new regs,
laws, and trends. For instance, 2014
topics included among many others
the following:
• ACH rules update
• Auditing loan portfolios, infor-
mation technology, social media, and
more
• Consumer collection compliance
• Red flags for ID theft
• Role of the board in the examina-
tion process
• Buy, sell, or remain independent:
three strategies
• Completing Call reports, SARS
reports, and more
Finally, a reminder to mark your
calendars: The next BOLT Leadership
Winter Summit is set for Tuesday,
Dec. 2, at the Wilderness Resort in
Wisconsin Dells.
