How to Keep Up with Changing Requirements
CBW Education Offerings Meet Growing Demand
Doris Green
It’s no secret that Wisconsin com-
munity banks must allocate a grow-
ing percentage of staff and financial
resources to learning the latest regu-
lations and laws governing banking
post-Great Recession. Thanks to a
growing range of CBW educational
programming, there’s no need for a
bank compliance officer to travel far
afield to learn about the latest news
and legal requirements confronting
the industry.
As Mark Nelson, senior vice presi-
dent/CIO at Horicon Bank noted,
“Horicon Bank utilizes a broad scope
of educational resourses from CBW
from webinars on hot compliance
topics to long-term leadership pro-
grams. We rely on the CBW team to
sort through the constantly changing
regulatory environment and provide
relevant topics that are to the point.”
He added, “Both BOLT and the
new Leadership Development for
Community Bankers program are
great solutions for us at Horicon Bank
as we are focusing, like many other
community banks, on building a
strong succession plan.”
Here’s a round-up of the offerings,
which include webinars (available in
real-time and archived), in-person
seminars, and conferences focused on
many, or just a few, sizzling hot topics.
BOLT
BOLT (Building Our Leaders of
Tomorrow) is a group of CBW mem-
bers focused on peer networking,
educational growth, and leadership
development to foster the future of
the industry in Wisconsin. The BOLT
Board of Directors sets direction for
the group and its Active Strike Forces:
Professional Development Commit-
tee, Advocacy Committee, and Con-
nections Committee. Summits in June
and December each year, as well as the
BOLT Leadership in Action e-newslet-
ter, provide opportunities to learn the
skills needed to become respected and
effective community banking leaders,
and to engage in legislative, regulatory,
and public affairs advocacy.
CBWManagement Conference & Expo
Each September, the CBWMan-
agement Conference & Expo brings
together community bankers from
across the Badger State to network
and learn about the latest industry
developments, legal and regulatory
issues, new technologies, security hot
topics, and economic news. Begin-
ning with a golf outing, the conference
encompasses the association’s annual
meeting and announcements of the
Community Banker of the Year and
Lifetime Service Award recipients. An
exhibit hall provides in-person access
to industry vendors and showcases
new products and services.
Community Bankers for Compliance
For a dozen years CBW has spon-
sored the Community Bankers for
Compliance Program (CBC) in col-
laboration with Young & Associates,
which specializes in compliance train-
ing and consulting for community
banks. The CBC program consists of
quarterly full-day seminars based on
the most recent industry and regula-
tory developments, access to Young
& Associates’ toll-free compliance
hotline, and a CBC members-only
website that provides timely compli-
ance information and tools. Last year,
about 90 banks participated in CBC
and over 150 bankers attended one or
more of the workshops.
Leadership Development for
Community Bankers
In September, 23 Wisconsin com-
munity bankers formed the first
cohort of the new CBW Leadership
Development for Community Bank-
ers program. Created in collaboration
with the UW-Madison Center for
Professional and Executive Develop-
ment (CPED), the program consists
of four, two-day modules presented
at The Fluno Center in Madison. The
program provides higher-level person-
alized training and is designed to help
banks create a skilled and energized
leadership team.
Member Appreciation Days
For the past 13 years, CBW’s Mem-
ber Appreciation Days has offered a
day-long educational and golf event at
three locations around the state, with
complimentary admission to the first
registrant from each member bank.
Participants can choose from three
dates in early summer, each with its
own slate of topics and expert speak-
ers. Each date features morning edu-
cational presentations, a light lunch,
and afternoon golf outing.
